Why is the Rebublican mascot the elephant?

When they all have such short memories? After 12 years of acting like middle school jocks slamming Dems heads into lockers when they had the majority,now they kick and scream and cry "No Fair!!!!" when the Dems finally grow a set and get down in the mud and beat them at their own game.
